THE IMPORTANCE OF PARKER’S SUPARCASE FERRULE HARDENING

When it comes to compression tube fittings, the most effective designs balance hardness, strength, and corrosion resistance. Parker has worked to develop a chemical hardening process that’s ideal for ferrules designed to grip stainless steel tubing—a process known as Suparcase. This process does not utilize high temperatures in long durations, which aids corrosion resistance properties.

When highly engineered, ferrules require considerable design expertise, as these components are arguably the most critical in compression tube fittings. Ferrules must deform, grip and seal the tubing precisely to avoid any leaks or damage. During the hardening process, stainless steel’s corrosion resistance must not be compromised and the ferrule must hold a tight tolerance to maintain specifications.

In a recent blog post, Parker described the importance of the Suparcase process on compression tube fittings. Some of the most important benefits include:

  • Keeps chromium as a solid, corrosion-resistant element
  • Creates a hardened layer that is continuous, defect-free and reduces end-grain corrosion effects
  • No sensitization or change in strength beneath the hardened layer
  • No cracking or spalling during assembly
  • Removes passive oxide layers from the surface, allowing carbon atoms to diffuse into the metal without crossing through the passive layer barrier

Ferrule fittings require a critical balance of hardening during assembly. If a ferrule is hardened too much, it may be too stiff during assembly and unable to grip the tubing properly. Conversely, if the ferrule is not hardened enough, the underlying material will not support the hardened surface, which can result in the edges collapsing under pressure.

Once assembled, it’s common for stainless steel parts to rub together under pressure, causing the parts to cold weld and seize. To prevent unwanted ferrule movement, the hardened surface should be controlled with lubrication at the ferrule and body interfaces. Since defects exacerbate seizing, all mating surfaces should be smooth and free of any blemishes.
