MAKE THE BEST SAFETY PLAN FOR COMPRESSED GAS
Using compressed gases in the laboratory can be extremely dangerous if handled incorrectly. Many gases have destructive properties, and when constricted in tanks and cylinders under high pressure, any release of gas can spread quickly and endanger lab personnel. It is crucial that you have a thorough safety plan in place in order to prevent accidents.
In a recent blog post, Parker discussed the importance of a safety plan and implementing specific safety measures in the laboratory. At the very least, any compressed gas safety plan must include the recommendations of the Department of Transportation (DOT), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) for instruction on handling, transporting and storing compressed gas cylinders.
Secondly, employees who handle compressed gas cylinders should be familiar with the physical and chemical properties of the gases they handle, as well as the potential risks and safety hazards of each in a given setting.
Lastly, lab directors or safety directors should be properly equipped to train all employees in the comprehensive safety plan and provide them with a copy. Parker suggests using on-site gas generators as a safe alternative to prevent the risks that compressed gas tanks and cylinders present.
