WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW WHEN SELECTING THE RIGHT INSTRUMENTATION TUBING

Every instrumentation system starts with safe, reliable tubing to ensure leak-free operation. With many options to choose from, selecting the right tube for your application relies on many key factors.

In a recent blog post, Parker discusses four critical parameters to consider when selecting a quality instrument tube. These factors include:

  1. Material Compatibility: The most important consideration when selecting tubing for your application is to ensure it is compatible with the material it will contain. Some tubing materials are made to handle corrosive chemicals, while others are suitable for oil and gas. Make sure the tubing you select can handle the materials and conditions it will be working with.

  1. Tubing Hardness: Every material has a specified hardness level that will influence the rest of the instrumentation system. Always select a tubing material that is softer than the tube fitting.

  1. Wall Thickness: Thickness of the tube wall plays a major role in how much pressure it can safely handle. Make sure to measure the outside diameter of the tubing, as well as the wall thickness to ensure the tube you select can handle the specific pressure of your application.

  1. Elevated Temperature: Temperature directly affects the level of pressure tubing can handle. At elevated temperatures, a derating factor should be applied to the working pressure to determine the correct amount it can handle.

It can be difficult to know where to start when designing and engineering an instrumentation system. With these factors in mind, you can be confident that the tubing you choose will lead to a successful application.
